50th Anniversary!

As we sit here at the 50th anniversary of the New Hampshire Special Olympics Summer Games – it gives us great perspective on life.

In marriage, so many of our challenges come from being two different people with opposing viewpoints.

Here, we are watching a community of Special Olympics athletes who have intellectual and/or physical challenges because they were either born with them or had some event that caused their disability.

Michael’s son, Liam, was born with Down syndrome. For those who don’t know, Down syndrome is a genetic disorder caused by the presence of an extra 21st chromosome. It is typically associated with physical growth delays, moderate intellectual disability and characteristic facial features.

The Special Olympics Summer Games, and other events in Special Olympics, are a time to celebrate people with disabilities who otherwise would not have the opportunity to participate in sports programs. It is truly a blast to witness and even more fun to participate!

As we said, these events give perspective on life. Our challenges in marriage can seem debilitating at times. But, they don’t need to be.

However, the challenges that these athletes are faced with are permanent. Now, there are things we can do so they aren’t so debilitating, and participating in Special Olympics is one.

This perspective is important.

Our challenges in marriage are not permanent. We can, and need to, be working to grow our relationship to reduce challenges with our spouse every day.

It is a joy to have a son with Down syndrome for so many reasons and perspective is one of them. Of course, LOVE is the biggest. The LOVE he gives us, and everyone around, is intoxicating!

We highly encourage you to try volunteering at a Special Olympics event – you won’t regret it!

And think about the perspective on challenges!  Have a great weekend!
