We read a quote and statistic today that was eye-catching to say the least!
40% of families in your church and community are blended families.
Yup – that’s us! We are in the growing statistic of couples who got married, had kids, got divorced and then remarried. And our kids are still under 18 so they are living with us part-time.
There was a time, which seemed not too long ago, when our churches and communities were mostly filled with the “traditional” family – meaning married once with kids.
But, as we all know, over the last couple of decades blended family living has been on the rapid increase.
In fact, approximately 33% of all weddings today will form step-families.
You may have heard in the past that 50% of marriages end in divorce. That isn’t actually true. That was a prediction and a statistic that was never actually reached. Additionally, you have heard that 60% of second marriages and 73% of third marriages end in divorce – also not true.
In truth, an estimated rate of divorce for first time marriages is 20-25%, for all marriages is 31% and it is 34% for remarriages.
You can find all the juicy data here.
Our point today? Look around your church and pay close attention. Nearly half of your church family is blended!
This is why we have such a passion for STRONG MARRIAGES – because remarriage and stepfamilies are on the rise and we need to be ministered to in a unique way.
So talk to your pastors, your priests, your ministers – and ask them to consider preaching about blended families. Ask them to make stepfamilies feel more welcome and not like – well – like what stepfamilies have felt like in the past which isn’t very good.
Most importantly, if you are involved in marriage ministry in your church or community, make sure you prepare for blended families as well!
